Gaza: A storm approaches?

After Israel maintained the blockade of the Gaza strip, the unstable situation in the Middle East is threatening to escalate further. «Our local activities focus on maintaining services for the needs of the youngest and most vulnerable», says Andreas Bachofner, Chairman of Children’s Relief Bethlehem UK. Children’s Relief Bethlehem has been active in the region for nearly 60 years financing and managing the Baby Hospital in Bethlehem. It also supports humanitarian projects in the Gaza strip. Children’s Relief Bethlehem has often witnessed situations where the conflict has been brought to a head. However, the latest military blow reflects the extreme tension that has been growing over the past months.

«In this area of regional conflict we are always exposed to violence and counter-violence, however, our prime concern is on an operational level», explains Andreas Bachofner. He draws attention to the fact that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza strip and in the West Bank has been very difficult and exceedingly precarious for many years. Aid agencies such as Children’s Relief Bethlehem have to dedicate increasing amounts of support to ensure ongoing humanitarian services.

«Children and mothers are suffering from a conflict they cannot escape. We continue to stand at their side and support them – irrespective of nationality or religion», said Bachofner. Children’s Relief Bethlehem is currently preparing measures in case they need to act quickly if the situation should deteriorate. «We appeal for help in these challenging times.»
